The Alexandria Biennale for Mediterranean Countries is set to make its long-awaited comeback in 2026 after a 12-year pause, marking the 27th edition of one of the region’s most significant international art events. First launched in 1955 under the patronage of President Gamal Abdel-Nasser, the biennale has historically brought together artists from across the Mediterranean, showcasing pioneering talents such as Inji Aflatoun, Gazbia Sirry, and Adham Wanly. Despite challenges that suspended the event in 2011, its revival comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen Egypt’s cultural institutions and reaffirm Alexandria’s role as a leading hub for Mediterranean and African art.
