The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched a global initiative to identify the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World—recognising modern landmarks that have transformed tourism, strengthened local communities and reshaped the identity of destinations through their cultural, economic and architectural significance.
Among the iconic sites highlighted at the launch is Egypt’s Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), standing alongside internationally renowned landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The campaign celebrates places that not only attract visitors but also stimulate investment, create employment and contribute to long-term destination development.
Open to landmarks and buildings created since 1801, the year-long initiative invites the public to help identify the places that best define the modern era of travel. Evaluation criteria extend beyond architecture to include tourism contribution, economic impact, community value and the role each landmark plays in shaping its destination.
The campaign will unfold over four stages:
- 7 July 2026: Global nominations open.
- 7 January 2027: The 70 nominees are announced and public voting begins.
- 7 April 2027: The shortlist is narrowed to 30 finalists.
- 7 July 2027: The 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World are officially revealed.
As one of the world’s newest cultural landmarks, the Grand Egyptian Museum represents more than a museum—it reflects Egypt’s ongoing investment in heritage, innovation and world-class visitor experiences. Its inclusion in this global initiative further reinforces the country’s position as one of the world’s leading cultural tourism destinations.
